Hey Hotboxx! How are you?

Doing well, thanks for asking!

To start our interview, can you tell us what led to you remixing Mack Marquezz’s track ‘0024’?

The A&R for Tres 14 Records actually approached me about releasing some tracks with them, and I told him I would try and put a demo pack together. And then he sent me the Mack Marquezz’s track. I really liked a lot of the elements and he asked me if I wanted to remix it.

How did you approach reworking the track? What did the process look like?

I really tried to only use the elements of the original track on the build ups and made the drops my own, by really using only my elements for the most part. I wanted it to be a terrace type, after hours, club track.

Were there any elements of the original that you worked to maintain in your remix of the track?

The vocal atmosphere during the build up was one of my favorite elements in the original and I really wanted to make sure I used it for my remix. The bassline I used is filtered as a build up element, as I didn’t want to use the original’s bassline, but I did like it as a build up synth-type element, when the low-end was filtered out.

How would you say this new track showcases your signature style? When it comes to remixing a track, how do you balance staying true to the essence of the original while ensuring your own unique style comes through?

Really, I recreated a lot of the track so there really wasn’t a choice, but to make it my own and clearly have my style reflect on the track.  That is why I made so much of the track from scratch and used the elements for the original, scattered throughout as details.

The soundscape features thumping beats and Latin-infused rhythmic details. Can you tell us how you created these elements to ensure the track kept driving forward, building an enthralling sonic experience for your listeners to enjoy?

I wanted to put a terrace type late night feel on it, so the rolling bass really drove me to make a space terrace type track that had some Latin influence. I am Hispanic and love throwing those kinds of elements that are groovy and get people dancing. Ultimately, that is my goal for my music.

Does your process for reworking a track differ at all from when you work on original productions?

Not really, I guess the main difference is just that I like to listen to the original and choose which elements I am going to use to start off and once I do that I really follow the same process for the most part.

Do you have any favourite techniques that you like to use when producing?

I mean I am a creature of habit, so my work flow is generally similar on most tracks, I use a lot of stock Ableton plugins and effects as well, Ableton already has some amazing sounds, synths and instruments built in.

The bassline of the remix adds to the overall groovy sound and funky energy of the track. How do you approach creating such powerful basslines within your productions? do you have any specific techniques that you use each time?

I really have been trying to make my basslines simple and less melodic recently. I feel like a rolling sub-driven bassline like that would keep the dancefloor moving at the club. So, my technique recently has been to keep it simple and not get too melodic with the bassline, just treat it as a sub that moves the record forward.

What do you have planned next? Are there any more releases or live shows that we can look forward to?

Absolutely, I’ll be releasing at least 20-30 new tracks this year so keep an eye out basically 2-3 times a month, as I’ll have new records coming out. Some tracks I’ve had in the archives that are finally seeing the light of day, so I am pumped for those. Also, if you’re in Miami for Miami Music Week, make sure to stop by, as I’ll be playing 4 nights that week at Savage Labs In Wynwood, and have some other shows in Nashville coming up this next month as well.
