Hello DJ Dris, how’s it going? Congratulations on the release of ‘Origins’! To begin, what inspirations and influences would you say had an impact on the overall sound of this new release?

Hi, thank you very much. I’m doing well and continuing to embrace the journey. For ‘Origins’ I felt a real need to delve into different African dialects – that set the tone of the track.

When you set out to produce ‘Origins’, did you have any particular goals or aspirations you were hoping to achieve?

Making ‘Origins’ was a tribute to my ancestry and Africa as a whole. Also making a reference to the cultures that the genre of Afro House originated from.

Tell us about the production process. Which element did you start with and how did you then approach building the rest of the track?

I started the creation process by playing a pad progression which then sculpted the basis of the track. Once I determined my pad progression notes then I was set.

How would you say your approach to production is developing as you evolve as a Producer? Has your workflow changed at all since you embarked on your musical journey?

From when I produced ‘Origins’ to now, my approach has really come on leaps and bounds. Honestly, every day I am learning. Trying new things and really pushing myself to do better.

What is your favourite part of this new track? Is there an element you are particularly proud of?

I personally love the strong bassline that is timely with the toms. That is something I have taken forward for the future productions that will be released.

The track features a strong groove that evolves as more rhythmic details are added. Can you tell us about your process when it comes to creating the beats of your tracks? How do you create such funky-sounding rhythms within your productions?

I put together as many components of a track as I can and make sure they sound good together. Once I have decided I have all the elements, I then choose where the elements will enter the composition. With regards to the sounds, I try to merge different sounds and textures with the traditional sounds of the genre, to give something new and fresh, which usually creates a funky feel.

How would you say ‘Origins’ differs from your recent releases like ‘Lose My Breath’ and ‘Ethereal’?

I believe ‘Origins’ is getting closer to Afro Tech in terms of genre. With my releases being in chronological order it shows the progression of my musical journey from ‘Ethereal,’ sounding more mellow and ‘Lose My Breath’ being more tribal.

‘Origins’ includes a compelling vocal line that adds to the captivating vibes of the track. What was the decision behind adding the vocal? At what stage of the production process did you choose to integrate a vocal and how did you work to incorporate it into the production?

I knew I wanted this track to have an African dialect for the vocal part. Once I had the basis of the composition set, I looked for a vocal that I felt was fitting based on the idea for the track. Even though I found the vocal I liked, I felt I needed to check in with my Kenyan friends to translate it and make sure it fit the context. That was the most important task for me.

What do you have planned next? Can you tell us about your upcoming releases?

Yeah sure! I have two more releases out this month. One is called ‘Underwater’ and the other is ‘Afrocana’. Both are great tracks which I can’t wait to share! We’ve got a couple lined up for June and July as well, which I will leave for you to discover very soon.
